Nib Waverley Award

St Albans festival attendees. You may recall the announcement of the Nib Waverley Prize shortlist over a glass of champagne during our 2016 festival. The shortlist was as follows:

Stan Grant – Talking To My Country
Gerard Henderson – Santamaria, A Most Unusual Man
Melanie Joosten – A Long Time Coming: Essays on old age
Rachel Landers – Who Bombed The Hilton?
Helen O’Neill – Daffodil
Luke Williams – The Ice Age: A Journey Into Crystal-Meth Addiction

The announcement of the winner was made today in Bondi and as sponsors, we were there for the event. So congratulations to Rachel Landers (who will attend our 2017 festival over the weekend of 8-10 September) for winning the Nib Waverley award for 2016 for her book Who Bombed the Hilton? Anyone living in Sydney in February 1978 will remember what is often called the first terrorist bombing on Australian soil. It killed three people, injured several others and despite trials and convictions remains unsolved nearly forty years later. Rachel Landers, Head of Documentary at the AFTRS with a background as a historian has pored exhaustively (and exhaustingly!) through the official material from State Records, follows up all possible leads, meets potential informants in cafes and presents all the information as a gripping narrative. Does she give us the answer? You’ll have to read the book… We look forward to hearing Rachel speak about her research and the story itself. The People’s Choice Prize has been won by Melanie Joosten and After the Blast by Garth Callender has won the Military History Literary Prize. We hope that Melanie and Garth will also be able to join us in September next year.
